About the Game

Released in 2016, Okhlos: Omega was developed by Coffee Powered Machine and published by Devolver Digital. It is an action roguelike with real-time strategy elements, drawing its inspiration entirely from Greek mythology and the world of Ancient Greece. Its title comes from the Greek word "okhlos" (ὄχλος), meaning "the crowd" or "the mob," reflecting the game's central theme of a popular uprising against the Olympian gods.

The story begins when an unnamed philosopher witnesses his school being destroyed by a careless Olympian deity. Realizing that the gods have become tyrannical rulers indifferent to humanity, he gathers ordinary citizens into a rebellion. Beginning alone, he travels across Ancient Greece recruiting peasants, slaves, warriors, craftsmen, and other followers willing to rise against divine oppression. Their ultimate objective is to march to Mount Olympus and overthrow the Greek pantheon itself.

Rather than faithfully adapting classical mythology, the game presents a humorous and satirical interpretation of Greek legends. The Olympian gods appear as oppressive rulers abusing their power, while humanity unites in an unprecedented revolution. Despite its comedic tone, the world is filled with recognizable mythological figures, locations, artifacts, and references to ancient Greek culture.

Gameplay combines fast-paced action with crowd management. Players directly control the philosopher while commanding a constantly growing mob that moves as a single unit. Throughout each procedurally generated adventure, the crowd destroys temples, statues, military outposts, and enemy forces while recruiting additional followers to strengthen the rebellion. As the mob grows larger, its destructive power increases, but coordinating such a massive group also becomes more challenging.

Combat takes place in real time and emphasizes movement, positioning, and resource management. If the philosopher falls or the entire mob is eliminated, the run ends and players begin a new procedurally generated adventure, following the traditional roguelike structure. Each playthrough offers different heroes, upgrades, encounters, and map layouts, encouraging experimentation with new strategies.

Throughout the campaign, players can recruit more than 100 legendary heroes inspired by Greek mythology and history. Figures such as Heracles, Perseus, Leonidas, Atalanta, Odysseus, and Orpheus each possess unique abilities that significantly alter the composition and effectiveness of the mob, creating a wide variety of tactical possibilities.

Enemies are equally rooted in Greek mythology. Players battle Minotaurs, Cyclopes, Gorgons, Satyrs, Harpies, Centaurs, and numerous other legendary creatures before confronting the Twelve Olympian Gods themselves. Each deity serves as a unique boss encounter with attack patterns and abilities inspired by their mythological roles.

The game's visual presentation features colorful pixel art that blends Ancient Greek architecture with a humorous cartoon style. Temples, marketplaces, theaters, ports, and classical cities are depicted with exaggerated personality, while dialogue and item descriptions contain numerous references to Greek philosophy, mythology, and history.

The Omega edition expands the original release with additional heroes, enemies, gameplay mechanics, locations, collectibles, and a digital encyclopedia dedicated to the game's interpretation of Ancient Greece and its mythology.

Okhlos: Omega offers one of the most original interpretations of Greek mythology in modern gaming. Instead of placing players in the role of a legendary hero or Olympian god, it tells the story of ordinary people rising together against divine authority, combining action, strategy, humor, and mythology into a distinctive adventure set in the ancient Greek world.
