About the Game

Released in 2020 by Supergiant Games following an acclaimed Early Access period, Hades is a roguelike action game that combines fast-paced combat, character-driven storytelling, and progression systems into one of the genre's most celebrated modern experiences. Inspired by Greek mythology, the game places players in the role of Zagreus, the immortal Prince of the Underworld, as he repeatedly attempts to escape his father's realm in search of the truth about his origins. Rather than treating repeated failure as a punishment, Hades integrates death directly into its narrative and progression, making every escape attempt a meaningful part of the overall experience.

Gameplay revolves around procedurally generated escape attempts through the different regions of the Underworld. Each run presents new enemy encounters, room layouts, rewards, and opportunities, ensuring that no two journeys unfold in exactly the same way. While every defeat returns Zagreus to the House of Hades, players permanently retain certain resources that can be invested in character upgrades, weapon enhancements, and relationships with the game's extensive cast. This structure creates a satisfying gameplay loop in which every attempt contributes to long-term progression, even when immediate success proves elusive. Combat is fast, fluid, and highly responsive, emphasizing movement, timing, and adaptability over simple button-mashing. Players can choose from several Infernal Arms, each offering a distinct combat style ranging from swift melee attacks to powerful ranged weapons. Throughout each escape attempt, the Olympian gods provide divine Boons that modify Zagreus' abilities in countless ways, allowing players to create unique combinations that dramatically influence their strategy. Additional upgrades through Daedalus Hammers, Keepsakes, Mirror of Night talents, and weapon Aspects further expand build variety, encouraging experimentation and rewarding mastery of the game's mechanics. One of Hades' defining achievements is its narrative design.

Unlike many roguelikes that treat story as secondary, Hades seamlessly integrates dialogue, character development, and world-building into every gameplay cycle. Each return to the House of Hades introduces new conversations with gods, shades, and mythological figures, gradually revealing personal relationships, hidden motivations, and emotional conflicts. The game's writing balances humor, tragedy, and warmth while presenting familiar Greek myths through a fresh, character-focused perspective that remains respectful of its mythological inspirations without being constrained by traditional interpretations. The cast includes numerous iconic figures from Greek mythology, including Hades, Persephone, Nyx, Achilles, Orpheus, Eurydice, Thanatos, Megaera, Dionysus, Athena, Artemis, Zeus, Poseidon, Aphrodite, Hermes, Demeter, and many others. Rather than functioning merely as quest-givers or background characters, each possesses a distinct personality, evolving dialogue, and meaningful role within Zagreus' journey. Building relationships through gifts of Nectar and Ambrosia unlocks additional storylines, cosmetic rewards, and deeper emotional connections, making interaction with the cast just as rewarding as combat itself. Artistically, Hades stands out through its striking hand-painted environments, expressive character portraits, and fluid animation. Every region of the Underworld features a unique visual identity, from the fiery depths of Asphodel to the tranquil beauty of Elysium, while the game's soundtrack, composed by Darren Korb, combines rock influences with orchestral and Mediterranean elements to create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Professional voice acting across the entire cast further enhances the emotional weight and personality of every interaction. Beyond its exceptional presentation, Hades succeeds because it carefully balances accessibility with mechanical depth. New players can gradually improve through permanent progression systems and optional accessibility features such as God Mode, while experienced players can dramatically increase the challenge through the Pact of Punishment, introducing customizable modifiers that significantly alter gameplay. This flexibility allows players of varying skill levels to enjoy the experience without compromising the core design.

Hades is widely regarded as one of the defining roguelike games of its generation, demonstrating how procedural gameplay and narrative storytelling can complement rather than compete with one another. Through its polished combat, exceptional writing, memorable characters, remarkable artistic direction, and innovative approach to progression, it delivers an experience that remains engaging across dozens of escape attempts while establishing itself as a modern classic within both the roguelike genre and action games as a whole.
