About the Game

Depths of Fear :: Knossos is a first-person action-adventure game combining horror, stealth and roguelike elements. It was developed by Dirigo Games and released on April 24, 2014 for Windows and macOS. The game uses the Unity engine and features procedurally generated levels, meaning that the labyrinth changes across different attempts.

The story places the player in the mythological world of ancient Crete, taking the role of Theseus. Athens faces the threat of King Minos, and Theseus offers himself as tribute before travelling to Crete. There he must descend deep beneath Knossos and enter the labyrinth to confront the legendary creature within: the Minotaur.

The central premise draws directly from the famous myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. However, the game greatly expands upon the traditional story, turning the labyrinth into a large, dark and dangerous environment filled with creatures and challenges. Theseus must face much more than the Minotaur during his journey.

Among the enemies encountered are Centaurs, Satyrs, Cerberus, Manticores, Griffins, Medusa and Hydras, alongside numerous other creatures inspired by Greek mythology. The labyrinth therefore becomes an entire mythological world rather than simply a recreation of the traditional Minotaur story.

Gameplay focuses on first-person exploration, with the player navigating the labyrinth while searching for a route toward its deeper levels. The environments are procedurally generated, meaning that their layouts and enemy encounters can change between attempts. This is a central part of the game's roguelike structure.

Survival requires a combination of combat, stealth and exploration. Players do not always have to confront every enemy directly. In some situations, moving through the shadows and avoiding enemies is the safer option, while other encounters require the use of weapons.

During exploration, Theseus can collect gold and equipment, which can be used to obtain and improve his arsenal. The game features eight weapons, ranging from blades and clubs to a trident and crossbow. Collecting medallions from different mythological creatures is also necessary to obtain the weapon capable of killing the Minotaur.

Another important element is the relationship between Theseus and the Olympian gods. Players can discover books associated with the gods and gain their favor, unlocking special powers. These include Zeus's lightning, Hermes' speed, Poseidon's strength and Apollo's illuminating light.

The game therefore combines several different aspects of Greek mythology. Its central narrative revolves around Theseus and the Minotaur, while its world expands the mythology through gods, monsters and legendary creatures.

The Labyrinth of Knossos serves as the central setting and becomes a dark and dangerous environment that the player must explore. Knossos and King Minos provide direct connections to the Cretan cycle of Greek mythology, while Athens and Theseus connect the adventure to the broader mythological world of ancient Greece.
