About the Game
Battle for Troy is a real-time strategy game released for Windows in 2004 and developed by American studio Zono, Inc. Its first release took place on March 5, 2004 in the United States through ValuSoft, while THQ and other distributors handled releases in several European markets.
The game takes players into the era of the Trojan War, using the story of Paris, Helen, Menelaus, and the siege of Troy as its central premise. The conflict begins when Paris, Prince of Troy, takes Helen, Queen of Sparta and wife of Menelaus. His actions lead to a war between the Greeks and the Trojans and the Greek campaign against Troy.
Unlike many strategy games of the period, Battle for Troy allows players to experience the conflict from both sides. It contains two separate campaigns: one focusing on the Greek forces and another on the Trojans. Each campaign consists of eight missions, with different objectives and military challenges.
On the Greek side, players command the forces of Menelaus and lead the Greek alliance against Troy. On the opposing side, the Trojans must defend their city against the invading Greek armies. The two campaigns therefore present the same conflict from two different perspectives, allowing players to experience both the attacking and defending sides of the war.
Gameplay follows the traditional mechanics of a real-time strategy game. Players command units in real time, move them across the battlefield, and use them to engage enemy forces. There are nine different unit types, including spearmen, swordsmen, archers, cavalry, and healers.
Unit selection and positioning are important aspects of combat. Different troops have different capabilities and can be used according to the circumstances of each battle. Players must organize their forces and adapt their offensive or defensive strategy depending on the enemy.
The game also incorporates elements directly associated with the Trojan War. One of the most recognizable is, naturally, the Trojan Horse, which appears as part of the game's military experience. Its inclusion is a direct reference to the famous episode traditionally associated with the Greek conquest of Troy.
Although the game is based on one of the most important stories of the ancient Greek tradition, it is not intended as a strict historical reconstruction. Battle for Troy draws on the Trojan War as it has been transmitted through Homeric tradition and mythology, turning the legendary conflict into a strategy game in which the armies and heroes of the period become the player's forces.
Its subject matter is therefore directly connected with ancient Greece and the wider mythological tradition surrounding Troy. Menelaus, Paris, Helen, and the city of Troy form the core of the narrative, while the entire conflict is based on the legendary Trojan War.
The game also includes a level editor, allowing players to create and modify maps. This adds another layer to the strategic side of the title and provides the possibility of creating scenarios beyond the main campaigns.
Visually, Battle for Troy uses a bird's-eye/diagonal perspective with a freely controllable camera, following the conventions of real-time strategy games of its era. Gameplay focuses on managing multiple units simultaneously and directing large-scale battles.
