About the Game
ARMA 3 is a tactical military shooter and military simulation developed by Czech studio Bohemia Interactive and released on September 12, 2013, for Windows PC. It is one of the major entries in the Arma series and combines single-player missions, multiplayer operations, and an extensive open military sandbox.
The game's connection to Greece is particularly strong. Its main island, Altis, is a fictional Mediterranean island directly inspired by the Greek island of Lemnos. Bohemia Interactive used real geographical and visual data from the Greek island as a foundation for creating the game's environment. The second major island, Stratis, is also part of the game's fictional setting and was inspired by the North Aegean region.
The story of ARMA 3 takes place in 2035, in a world where international relations have shifted and military tensions have increased. The Altis Armed Forces (AAF) control the islands of Altis and Stratis, while the wider conflict involves forces including NATO and the CSAT (Canton Protocol Strategic Alliance Treaty). The escalating situation eventually develops into a larger military conflict in which the player participates in a series of operations.
The game places a strong emphasis on tactics and realism. Unlike conventional first-person shooters, combat is not simply a sequence of firefights. Positioning, distance, use of cover, communication with teammates, and choosing the appropriate equipment can all have a major impact on the outcome of an operation.
Gameplay takes place across enormous open environments where players can travel on foot or using military vehicles, as well as helicopters and aircraft. The original release included more than 20 vehicles and 40 weapons, five factions, single-player showcases, and multiplayer scenarios.
Another major feature is the Scenario Editor and extensive modding support. Players can create their own missions and scenarios, while the community has produced a huge amount of additional content. As a result, ARMA 3 functions not only as a military game but also as a platform for creating and playing a wide variety of custom military scenarios.
The representation of Altis is particularly important to the game's connection with Greece. Its environment includes Mediterranean vegetation, hills, coastlines, villages, roads, military installations, and airfields, creating a landscape strongly reminiscent of the geography and character of Lemnos, while not being an exact recreation of the real island. Bohemia Interactive itself describes Altis as fictional, despite its direct inspiration from Lemnos.
