About the Game
Released in 2015, Apotheon was developed by Alientrap. It is a two-dimensional action platformer featuring metroidvania and role-playing elements, built almost entirely around Greek mythology. The game's most distinctive feature is its visual presentation, with every environment and character designed to resemble the artwork found on ancient Greek black-figure and red-figure pottery.
The story begins after the Olympian gods abandon humanity. Disappointed with mortals, Zeus withdraws the blessings of Olympus, bringing famine, destruction, and chaos upon the world. In response, Hera chooses an ordinary warrior named Nikandreos to ascend Mount Olympus, confront the gods themselves, and restore balance between the divine and human realms.
Throughout the adventure, Nikandreos travels across the domains of the Olympian gods. Players explore the realms of Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, Poseidon, Hephaestus, and other deities, each featuring unique architecture, enemies, environmental puzzles, and quests inspired by their respective myths. Every region presents a different interpretation of Greek mythology while remaining faithful to the personalities and symbolism associated with each god.
Gameplay combines fast-paced combat, exploration, and platforming. Nikandreos fights using swords, spears, bows, slings, shields, and other weapons inspired by Ancient Greece. Combat emphasizes timing, blocking, dodging, and weapon variety, while most weapons and shields gradually wear out with use, encouraging players to constantly adapt their equipment and make use of whatever they discover during exploration.
Exploration plays a central role in the experience. The world is interconnected through hidden passages, secret chambers, optional objectives, and collectible treasures. As players acquire divine relics and special abilities from defeated gods, previously inaccessible areas become reachable, rewarding backtracking and encouraging thorough exploration of every region.
Each Olympian deity serves as a major boss encounter with mechanics reflecting their mythological attributes. Defeating a god grants Nikandreos access to legendary artifacts such as Apollo's Bow, Hephaestus' Hammer, Hermes' Sandals, and other divine equipment that expands both combat options and traversal abilities throughout the world.
The game also incorporates numerous references to Greek mythology through collectible texts, item descriptions, and conversations. Although the central narrative is original, it includes a wide range of authentic mythological figures, creatures, locations, and legendary artifacts, creating a world deeply rooted in classical Greek tradition.
Apotheon's artistic direction is one of its defining characteristics. Every character animation, environment, and visual effect is inspired by the style of ancient Greek pottery, featuring flat silhouettes, ornamental patterns, and color palettes that closely resemble classical vase paintings. This distinctive presentation gives the game a visual identity unlike any other mythology-based title.
Apotheon is one of the most distinctive video games inspired by Greek mythology. By combining an original story with authentic mythological themes, exploration, challenging combat, and a visual style based on ancient Greek art, it offers an interactive experience that celebrates the mythology, culture, and artistic heritage of Ancient Greece.
