About the Game
Age of Empires was released in 1997 and established the historical real-time strategy formula that would define the series. Developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft, the game allows players to guide an ancient civilization through four technological ages: the Stone Age, Tool Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.
The original game features 12 civilizations, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonians and Yamato. Players gather food, wood, stone and gold, establish settlements, research technologies, construct buildings and create armies. Economic development, technological advancement and military expansion are all interconnected parts of the gameplay.
The Greek Campaign is one of the game's four major historical campaigns. Through a sequence of scenarios, players follow the development of Greek civilization and participate in conflicts inspired by events and periods from ancient Greek history. The campaign gives Greece a substantially larger role than simply being one of the selectable civilizations in the standard game.
The Greek civilization also has its own units, buildings and technologies, making it a fully integrated part of the game's strategic system. The original Age of Empires therefore uses Ancient Greece as one of its central historical settings alongside Egypt, Babylon and Yamato.
