About the Game
Achilles: Legends Untold is an action RPG developed by Polish studio Dark Point Games, drawing heavily from Greek mythology and the legendary hero Achilles. The game's first release took place on May 12, 2022, when it entered Early Access on Windows, while the full version was released on November 2, 2023. It combines an isometric perspective, souls-like combat, and action RPG mechanics within a world inspired by ancient Greece.
The story takes place after the events of the Trojan War. Achilles, having already experienced death, returns to the world of the living and becomes involved in a new conflict between gods and mortals. Hades becomes his patron and assigns him a series of tasks that take him across different regions of an ancient Greek-inspired world. One of Achilles' main objectives is to find the missing Hephaestus. His journey eventually brings him into conflict with Ares, while numerous gods, legendary heroes, and creatures from Greek mythology appear throughout the adventure. The game does not attempt to reproduce the Homeric epics exactly, instead using familiar mythological characters and concepts to create its own interpretation of Achilles' story.
Gameplay follows an isometric action RPG structure. Players directly control Achilles during combat, using different weapons, attacks, dodges, and defensive moves. Combat incorporates strong souls-like influences, requiring careful timing, stamina management, positioning, and observation of enemy attack patterns. Attacks can be combined into combos, while successful defense and well-timed counterattacks are important when facing stronger opponents. Character progression is based around a system of skills and abilities. Achilles can unlock new powers and adapt his fighting style according to the player's choices. Exploration and combat also provide equipment and other items that can be used to improve the character and develop a more effective build. The game's world consists of environments inspired by ancient Greece, including landscapes, ruins, temples, ancient structures, and mythological locations. Exploration extends beyond the main objectives, with optional activities, enemies, and items encouraging players to investigate areas away from the main path. Boss encounters form an important part of the experience. Powerful warriors and mythological creatures require different approaches, with successful victories depending heavily on learning attack patterns and recognizing opportunities to strike rather than simply relying on stronger equipment. The game also supports co-op multiplayer, allowing two players to explore the world and fight enemies together. This gives the core action RPG experience both a single-player and cooperative dimension.
From a technical perspective, Achilles: Legends Untold was developed using Unreal Engine, while its isometric perspective and world design draw from established action RPG and hack-and-slash traditions. The use of Greek mythology gives Dark Point Games a large collection of recognizable characters, gods, creatures, and stories that can be reinterpreted through a modern action RPG framework. Achilles: Legends Untold is therefore a game with a strong thematic connection to Greece, although it is not a Greek-developed production.
