About the Game
A Walk With Yiayia is a small independent narrative adventure developed entirely by Trent Garlipp. It was first released for PC on November 3, 2022, before later arriving on Nintendo Switch in November 2024. The game focuses on interpersonal relationships and storytelling rather than conventional action or difficult gameplay.
The player accompanies an elderly Greek grandmother, or “Yiayia,” on a walk around her neighborhood. After suffering a frightening fall, she has become afraid of going outside and has lost much of her confidence. The walk provides an opportunity to reconnect with her, encourage her to overcome her fears and discover more about her personality and experiences.
Gameplay consists primarily of exploration, conversations and small activities scattered around the neighborhood. Players can complete microquests while interacting with the environment and talking with Yiayia. There are no fail states, reinforcing the game's relaxed and accessible approach.
The Greek connection is particularly interesting because the game does not take place in Greece. Instead, it explores Greek identity and family relationships within an immigrant context in the United States. Its central themes include the experiences of first-generation immigrants, the relationship between grandparents and younger family members, aging, confidence and the exchange of experiences between generations.
Garlipp's personal experience was an important influence on the project. He has explained that after his grandfather died, his grandmother moved into his parents' home, and the experience of living with her and hearing her stories inspired him to create an interactive narrative dealing with the emotions surrounding family and declining confidence.
