About the Game
Cat Detective Albert Wilde is a mystery adventure game developed by Greek independent studio beyondthosehills, released on January 24, 2025, for PC. It combines classic film noir, detective mystery, comedy, and science fiction, presenting a world populated by humanoid animal characters.
The protagonist is Albert Wilde, a feline private investigator operating in a fictional version of 1930s New York. Albert is struggling financially and professionally, with his life far from the glamorous image of the classic private detective. His circumstances change when he becomes involved in a strange murder case that initially appears to be a conventional investigation but soon develops into something much more unusual.
The case involves a mysterious corpse, a bookie, a dangerous crocodile gang, and a wormhole leading to another reality. As Albert investigates, he discovers that the mystery is connected to quantum theory and parallel universes. What begins as a simple attempt to solve a murder gradually becomes a much larger adventure that takes the detective beyond the boundaries of ordinary reality.
Gameplay focuses primarily on exploration, conversations, interrogation, and puzzle solving. Albert moves through the city, talks to its inhabitants, and gathers information that can help him progress with his investigation. Conversations are an important part of the experience, with the player using information gathered from different characters to uncover the truth.
The game features a highly eccentric cast of humanoid animals. Albert encounters characters including a pig lawyer, a moose bookie, a flamingo, an out-of-tune sheep singer, a famous scientist, and a dangerous crocodile gang. The adventure features 27 different characters, contributing to its unusual and comedic atmosphere.
From a technical perspective, the developers describe the game as something between a walking simulator and an interactive novel, with a strong emphasis on narrative and comedy. It also contains small minigames and exploration sections, while the main adventure takes approximately 6–7 hours to complete.
A major part of the game's identity comes from its influence from classic film noir. Its city, nighttime environments, private detective protagonist, bars, criminal organizations, and murder investigation all draw from the traditional noir aesthetic of the 1930s. The use of animal characters and the addition of quantum science fiction, however, give the setting a distinctive and unconventional identity.
The game was originally presented under the title Albert Wilde: Quantum P.I. During development, the studio changed the name to Cat Detective Albert Wilde before release, making the game's central character and concept more immediately recognizable.
